R.E.P.O. Characters: Player & Monster Roster
Everything about the characters in R.E.P.O. — the customizable player robot, its stats, the team roles players adopt, and an at-a-glance roster of the monster cast.
Quick Answer
R.E.P.O. has one playable character: a robotic "semibot" with 100 health and 40 energy that every player controls. There are no built-in classes — all players are identical and differ only by color, cosmetics, and the team job they choose (hauler, scout, guard, support). The rest of the "cast" is the monster roster of 30+ enemies. Class systems like Runner/Tank only come from community mods.
The Player Character: Stats & Abilities
You play as a semibot — a small worker robot with big eyes. Here is what defines it:
Health (100)
Every semibot starts with 100 health. Take too many hits from a monster and you go down — teammates can then carry your head to the extraction point to revive you. Health can be raised at the Service Station.
Energy (40)
You start with 40 stamina/energy, used for sprinting and the tumble launch. It refills automatically when you stand still, and the cap can be upgraded at the shop.
Grab & Strength
Your character's defining ability is the physics grab — used to carry valuables, push carts and even toss teammates. Strength and Range upgrades make heavy hauls easier.
Everyone Is the Same Base Robot
In the base game there are no character classes — all players control an identical semibot with the same stats. What differs is the color, cosmetics, and the job each player chooses to do on the team.
Customizing Your Character
Your robot is the one thing you can make your own. Here is how appearance works:
Change Color (anytime)
Pick your color on the lobby screen before a run, or open the ESC menu mid-game to swap it. Color is the quickest way for teammates to tell each other apart in dark levels.
Cosmetics (500+ parts)
The 2026 Cosmetics Update added over 500 cosmetic parts. Find cosmetic boxes scattered through levels, extract them for tokens, then spend those tokens in the shop to unlock heads, bodies and accessories. Customization is opened from the same ESC menu or the pre-lobby screen.
Character Roles: How Teams Split the Work
Since all characters share the same stats, "roles" in R.E.P.O. are jobs the team agrees on — not locked classes. A coordinated four-player run usually covers these four:
The Grabber / Hauler
Focuses on carrying valuables to the extraction point. Usually the player who invests in Strength and Range upgrades so they can move heavy, high-value items without dropping them.
The Scout / Runner
Pushes ahead to map the level, find valuables and spot monsters early. Prioritizes Stamina upgrades so they can sprint, retreat and warn the team in time.
The Guard / Distractor
Watches the haulers' backs and uses items or noise to pull monsters away from a carry. A risky job — this is the player most likely to invest in Health and to bait enemies like the Huntsman or Reaper.
The Support / Reviver
Stays near downed teammates to grab their head and carry it to extraction for a revive, manages healing items, and keeps the cart moving. The glue that keeps a run from collapsing.
Want literal classes with abilities? The community mod REPORoles (on Thunderstore) adds assignable Runner/Tank/Mage-style roles — but these are not part of the base game. See the full Teamwork strategy guide →

Frequently Asked Questions
How many characters are there in R.E.P.O.?
There is only one playable character — the robotic "semibot" that every player controls. The cast then expands through the monster roster, which has grown past 30 enemies after the Monster Update. So when people search "REPO characters," they usually mean either the customizable player robot or the enemy line-up. This page covers both.
Are there character classes or roles in R.E.P.O.?
Not in the base game. Every player starts as an identical semibot with 100 health and 40 energy, and any differences come from the upgrades you buy and the job you take on the team (hauler, scout, guard, support). Class systems like Runner/Tank/Mage only exist through community mods such as REPORoles on Thunderstore, not in the vanilla game.
How do I customize my character in R.E.P.O.?
You can change your robot's color on the lobby screen or from the ESC menu while in-game. The 2026 Cosmetics Update added 500+ cosmetic parts: you find cosmetic boxes inside levels, extract them for tokens, then spend those tokens in the shop to unlock head, body and accessory parts.
What are the default character stats?
Every player begins with 100 health and 40 energy (stamina). Health determines how many monster hits you survive before going down, and energy powers sprinting and the tumble launch. Both stats can be permanently raised by buying Health and Stamina upgrades at the Service Station between levels.
Can dead characters come back?
Yes. When your character is downed, your head remains in the level. A teammate can pick up the head and carry it to the extraction point to revive you for the next stage. If every player is downed at once, however, it counts as a team wipe and the run's save is deleted, so keeping at least one player alive is critical.
Do characters have names, genders or backstories?
No. The semibots are anonymous worker robots with no fixed name, gender or backstory — your identity is purely the color and cosmetics you pick. The monsters, by contrast, have distinct names and behaviours (Huntsman, Reaper, Rugrat and so on), which is why most "character" lore in R.E.P.O. is really about the enemy roster.
What is the best role to play in a team?
There is no single best role — a balanced four-player run usually has one hauler, one scout, one guard and one support, with everyone helping carry during extraction. New players often do best as a scout or support while learning monster patterns. For a deeper breakdown of who should do what, see our Teamwork guide.
